Spousal sponsorship is one of the most document-heavy IRCC applications because the relationship itself must be proven — not just identity, eligibility, and finances. IRCC takes "marriage of convenience" detection seriously, and even genuine couples can face refusal if their documentation is weak or contradictory.

This checklist covers both inland (sponsoring a partner already in Canada) and outland (partner abroad) applications. Some documents differ slightly between the two streams.

Required documents

Identity (Both)
  • Valid passports (sponsor + applicant) Required
Sponsor's passport or Canadian citizenship/PR card; applicant's passport with all visa/stamp pages.
  • Birth certificates (sponsor + applicant) Required
Government-issued long-form birth certificates. Certified translations if not in English/French.
  • Photos (digital, both spouses) Required
IRCC specs photos for both sponsor and applicant.
  • Sponsor's proof of Canadian status Required
Canadian citizenship certificate, PR card, or COPR confirming sponsor is at least 18 and is a citizen or PR.
Relationship Proof
  • Marriage certificate Required
Government-registered marriage certificate. For common-law: 12+ months continuous cohabitation evidence required instead.
  • Wedding photos (or proposal/relationship photos) Required
Minimum 20-30 photos spanning the relationship: wedding, engagement, vacations, family gatherings, daily life. Date-stamped where possible.
  • Communication history Required
Chat logs, call records, email threads, video call screenshots spanning the relationship — especially during periods of separation.
  • Joint bank account / financial records Required
Joint account statements, shared credit card, sponsor sending money transfers, joint loan/lease documents. Strongest evidence of genuine relationship.
  • Travel evidence Required
Boarding passes, hotel reservations, passport stamps showing visits to each other's countries during the relationship.
  • Shared residential lease / property Optional
Lease showing both names, mortgage documents, utility bills in both names. Required for inland (in-Canada) applications.
  • Statutory declaration from witnesses Optional
Letters from family/friends who know both of you as a couple. Witnesses must include their contact details and how they know you.
  • Beneficiary designations Optional
Life insurance, retirement accounts, wills naming each other as beneficiary.
Forms (Sponsor)
  • Application to Sponsor (IMM 1344) Required
Sponsor's primary application form. Signed and dated.
  • Sponsorship Evaluation (IMM 5481) Required
Confirms sponsor is not in default of any previous sponsorship undertaking, not receiving social assistance, etc.
  • Sponsor's Notice of Assessment (NOA) Required
Most recent CRA Notice of Assessment. Sponsor must not be receiving social assistance (except for disability).
  • Sponsor employment letter Optional
Current employer letter on letterhead: position, salary, length of employment. Self-employed: business registration + tax returns.
Forms (Applicant)
  • Generic Application Form (IMM 0008) Required
    Applicant's main PR application form.
  • Relationship Information (IMM 5532) Required
Detailed questionnaire about the relationship: how you met, courtship, wedding, life together. The most-scrutinized form in the application.
  • Schedule A — Background (IMM 5669) Required
Applicant's full background: addresses (10 years), education, employment history, family information.
Background
  • Police certificates Required
From every country applicant lived in for 6+ months since age 18. Within 6 months of submission.
  • Upfront medical exam Required
Applicant + any dependent children. Use IRCC panel physician. Valid for 12 months.
  • Biometrics Required
CAD $85 per person. Applicant attends VAC after submission. Sponsor not required.

Most common spousal sponsorship refusal reasons

  • Insufficient relationship evidence — too few photos, no joint financial records, no chat history
  • Inconsistent timelines — wedding photos before "first met" date, conflicting story between forms
  • Cultural/language pattern flags — significant age gap, no shared language fluency, brief courtship before marriage
  • Sponsor ineligibility — past sponsorship undertakings, bankruptcy, social assistance, immigration history issues
  • Missing required forms — IMM 5532 (relationship info), IMM 5409 (statutory declaration of common-law)
