Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) targets healthcare workers (especially physicians), labour-market priorities, and recent NS graduates. NSNP has some of the fastest processing times in Canada — typically under 3 months for Express Entry-aligned streams.

Physician Stream — for doctors

NSNP's Physician Stream is the fastest path to PR for doctors:

  • Family physicians: must have offer from a Nova Scotia Health Authority
  • Specialists: must be in a designated shortage specialty
  • Includes general practitioners, anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, oncologists, ER physicians
  • No CRS requirement (base PNP — not Express Entry-linked)
  • Processing: 4–6 months

Labour Market Priorities — targeted draws

NS regularly invites Express Entry candidates in specific occupations. Recent target categories have included:

  • Registered nurses & nurse practitioners (NOC 31301, 31302)
  • Early childhood educators
  • Information technology (software developers, systems analysts)
  • Financial auditors & accountants
  • Civil engineers
  • Truck drivers (NOC 73300)

These draws often have lower CRS thresholds (300–450) than general federal draws.

Step-by-step NSNP application

  1. Check current target occupations on the NSNP website (lists change frequently)
  2. For Express Entry streams: have a valid EE profile
  3. Wait for a Letter of Interest from NSNP (issued from the EE pool)
  4. Apply within the deadline (usually 30 days)
  5. Receive nomination — 600 CRS bonus
  6. Federal PR application

Common NSNP refusal reasons

  • Occupation listed in EE profile doesn't match work experience
  • Settlement funds inadequate
  • Education claims not backed by ECA report
  • NS job offer wage below provincial median for occupation
