Why Alberta is attractive — low CRS cutoffs
Recent Alberta Express Entry draws (2025–2026):
- Lowest cutoff observed: CRS 300 (targeted Healthcare draws)
- Typical general draws: CRS 380–470
- Construction & Tech draws: CRS 300–400
For comparison, federal general draws require 480+ CRS. Alberta is the easiest PNP for lower-scoring candidates.
Alberta Opportunity Stream — for workers already in Alberta
If you're already working in Alberta on a valid work permit, this is the cleanest path. Requirements:
- 12+ months full-time work experience in Alberta in the qualifying occupation
- Currently employed in Alberta in the qualifying occupation
- NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, 3, or specific 4/5 occupations (limited list)
- Minimum CLB 5 (or CLB 4 for select trades)
- High school diploma minimum
- Wage meets Alberta minimum threshold for occupation
Rural Renewal Stream — community-driven
Designated rural Alberta communities partner with AAIP to attract workers. The community must endorse you, then AAIP processes the nomination.
Currently participating communities include: Brooks, Camrose, Drumheller, Edson, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, plus 20+ smaller communities.
Step-by-step AAIP Express Entry pathway
- Create an Express Entry profile and indicate interest in Alberta
- Wait for a Notification of Interest (NOI) — AAIP picks profiles from the EE pool
- Submit AAIP application within 30 days of NOI
- Receive provincial nomination — 600 CRS points added
- Federal PR application within 60 days of receiving federal ITA
Common AAIP refusal reasons
- Insufficient ties to Alberta (especially Express Entry stream)
- Job offer wage below Alberta median for occupation
- Work experience not at NOC TEER level claimed
- Settlement funds inadequate (varies by family size)
- Application missing the 30-day deadline after NOI
